The 3 Majors Declined Today On Comments by Fed Chairman Bernanke and Crude Oil Volatility

The 3 major indices retreated today: interest rates were on the minds of investors, as they reacted to comments made by Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke; jitters about crude oil contributed to the day's bearishness. 1,623,549,880 shares were traded @ The New York Stock Exchange®.

Shares of Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) component Caterpillar (CAT) fell by $3.48 (-4.78%) to close @ $69.33.

Shares of DJIA component Alcoa (AA) fell by $1.19 (-3.65%) to close @ $31.38.


Shares of NYSE Group (NYX) fell by $1.01 (-1.57%) to close @ $63.50.

Shares of Google (GOOG) fell by $5.00 (-1.32%) to close @ $374.44; the stock then recovered $0.76 in after-hours trading this evening.


Shares of U.S. Steel (X) lost $4.49 (-6.46%) to close @ $65.02; the stock then lost an additional $0.12 in after-hours trading this evening.

Shares of Allegheny Technologies (ATI) fell by $4.82 (-7.19%) to close @ $62.20; the stock then recovered $0.25 in after-hours trading this evening.


Many energy stocks declined today as the price on crude oil for future delivery surged, then retreated.

Shares of Sunoco (SUN) fell by $2.65 (-3.74%) to close @ $68.29; the stock then recovered $0.71 in after-hours trading this evening.

Shares of ConocoPhillips (COP) fell by $1.97 (-3.05%) to close @ $62.54.

Shares of Valero Energy (VLO) fell by $2.40 (-3.81%) to close @ $60.65.


Shares of Trizec Properties (TRZ) gained $4.08 (+16.59%) to close @ $28.68 on news that Brookfield Properties Corporation will buy Trizec.

Shares of D.R. Horton (DHI) lost $1.35 (-5.16%) to close @ $24.81.

Shares of Pulte Homes (PHM) fell by $1.58 (-5.04%) to close @ $29.75.


Shares of Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold (FCX) fell by $4.83 (-8.51%) to close @ $51.91; the stock then recovered $0.82 in after-hours trading this evening.
